History of the Dachshunds
The Dachshund, meaning "badger dog" in German, were originally breed to hunt badgers. A most formidable adversary. Courage and determination were essential in the dogs' performance of this task. These qualities are still strongly characteristic of the modern descendant of the old badger hunter, for the dachshund of today has lost none of the determination, fire, and pluck of his ancestors. To put it bluntly, in spite of his relatively small size, the dachshund is not a "wimp".
The modern Dachshund
The modern dachshund is essentially a housedog. His size enables him to fit comfortably in a house or an apartment. This is a vivacious little dog whose every act and movement exude an endearing charm and an overwhelmingly authetic joy of living. He is a clever, adaptable, versatile, good tempered, loyal, inquisitive, fun-loving, playful, alert, intelligent, and endowed with a dignity not often found in any other dog of his dimensions. All these virtues combined with his intensely affectionate nature make the dachshund an ideal companion. Dachshunds make excellent watchdogs. They are ever vigilant to outdoor noises, strangers that come to the door or that they see in close proximity of the house, and to other animals that may stray onto the premises. The standards have a particularly loud and rather menacing bark that make them sound like a much bigger dog.
Devotion of Dachshunds
If you don't want a dog that follows you everywhere you go and is almost always underfoot, the dachshund is probably not for you. Dachshunds just love to be with people, and it is as simple as that. Their love and devotion to you can be almost to much at times, but not for long. They will always manage to win you over. Dachshunds are always eager to please, and will always find ways to get your attention. They are truly the greatest dogs ever.
Dachshunds with Children
In my opinion, I would have no other breed for my children. Most say that you should not own or be owned by a dachshund if you have small children. I have three the youngest being a year old. Our dog Jake is the greatest with her and her with him. She can lay on him, love on him, do almost anything with him and he loves it. So I think to deprive a dachshund or a child from that is an injustice to both.
